Brown fused alumina has three grades with 95%, 90%, 80-85% by Al2O3. The primary standard divides BFA into first grade, second grade, and third grade. The different chemical content is due to the crystallization and precipitation in the brown fused alumina smelting process. The middle part of electric arc furnace brown fused alumina is the best crystalline and high purity with 95% Al2O3. In the upper of the furnace, brown fused alumina is 90% content, and 80-85% brown fused alumina is in the bottom of the furnace. The price and usage are various due to the different chemical content.

Brown fused alumina refractory is a dense material produced from bauxite raw material. The end product has a low iron content making it particularly valuable in refractory applications. Brown fused alumina is utilized within the refractory industry to manufacture high alumina unshaped or monolithic refractory products like bricks, castable, pre-cast shapes, and foundry applications, where the addition of brown fused alumina helps to obtain a smooth surface finish in investment castings.
