Grinding Paste Introduction

The following is the introduction to Grinding Paste. Grinding / Lapping paste is a mixture of hard abrasives particles in a suitable base for asperity removal from metal surfaces. The base can be oil-based or water-based. The hard particles used are aluminum oxide, silica or silicon carbide, glass, boron carbide, etc. The lapping paste is graded from extra coarse to extra fine. There are few grits of larger size abrasives in extra coarse, and it is used for rough lapping. In extra fine grinding paste, there are many grits of very fine particles, and it is used for fine lapping. The larger the grit rating of the lapping paste, the finer the paste. Grinding / Lapping paste is used to cut, smooth, and finish metal surfaces and for the precision matting of metal parts. Amount of abrasive applied:

This decision is made by knowing the type of material you will be working with. Open Coat – Here, the abrasive granules cover from 50% – 70% of the backing and are set at pre-determined spacing to reduce loading. Used on softer surface materials that tends to load or fill

Form and shape of the abrasive:

This decision is made by determining how the abrasive will be used by the individual. Abrasives are sold in forms such as sheets, large/small discs, belts, and large/small rolls. Selecting the right form is determined by whether the abrasive will be used for hand. sanding, applied to a large disc

How is fused alumina obtained?

Raw materials containing aluminium oxide are electrothermally melted at a reaction temperature of more than 2,000 °C to produce the various fused aluminas. Different starting materials are used depending on the desired type of fused alumina. For instance,
