Silicon carbide (SiC) is made by using quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal char), and wood chips as raw materials through high-temperature smelting in an electric resistance furnace. Silicon carbide has many other uses due to its stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient and good wear resistance. Low grade silicon carbide (about 85% SiC) is an excellent deoxidizer, which speeds up steelmaking and facilitates control of chemical composition and quality of steel. In addition, silicon carbide is also widely used to make silicon carbide rods for electric heating elements. Application of silicon carbide products (1) Application in the metallurgical industry (1) Ironmaking. Silicon carbide bricks, silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide bricks or graphite silicon carbide bricks are used in the hearth, belly, waist and tuyere of the ironmaking blast furnace. A silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide tile is used on the blast furnace tuyere. Al2O3-SiC-C composite bricks containing silicon carbide and amorphous materials are used in the lining of torpedo tanks and mixed iron furnaces, as well as in the iron mud material and the mortar for the taphole. (2) Steelmaking. In steelmaking, the steel water temperature measuring sleeve is made of silicon carbide, and the non-fired brick containing silicon carbide is used to make the steel drum lining, and the silicon carbide-containing Al2O3 is used on the continuous casting long nozzle brick and the integral plug rod. – SiC-C brick. (3) Rolling steel. A corundum silicon carbide sliding rail brick and a non-ceramic heat exchanger are used on the rolling steel heating furnace, and a silicon carbide muffle cover is used on the iron scale reduction furnace. (2) Application in the non-ferrous metal industry (1) Copper smelting. In the case of copper smelting, silicon carbide bricks are used in vulnerable parts such as the burner area of the electrolytic copper melting shaft furnace. (2) Aluminum smelting. In the aspect of aluminum smelting, the lining of the aluminum reverberatory furnace, the bottom of the furnace, the silicon carbide brick for the lower wall of the liquid surface, or the silicon carbide brick combined with silicon nitride and sialon. Silicon carbide bricks are used in the electrolysis tank, aluminum flow tank, aluminum outlet, and cast aluminum mold for aluminum smelting. (3) Zinc smelting. In terms of zinc smelting, thermal equipment such as zinc-smelting vertical tank distillation furnaces, condensers and rotors are lined with silicon carbide furnaces. Silicon carbide bricks are also used in electrothermal distillation furnaces, electrode holes, zinc vapor circulation pipes and passages, condensers and rotors. Silicon carbide products are also used in the trays of the zinc rectification furnace. (4) Magnesium smelting furnace. The lining of the magnesium smelting furnace and the crucible for smelting of non-ferrous metals use silicon carbide refractories. (3) Application in building materials industry (1) In terms of ceramics, the silicon carbide slabs used in the production of daily kiln, building ceramics, art ceramics, electronic ceramics, etc., various types of kiln, such as tunnel kiln, shuttle kiln, hood kiln, downwind kiln, etc. Pillars, shackles, etc. A silicon carbide plate is used as a flame plate, a furnace bottom, and the like on the muffle furnace. Electric furnace bushings and muffle sleeves can be made on the electric furnace. (2) On the cement rotary kiln, the wear-resistant silicon carbide brick is used as the discharge lining brick. (4) Application in petrochemical industry When HCl and Na2S04 are produced by decomposing salt of sulfuric acid, a muffle sleeve is produced from a silicon carbide material, a silicon carbide atomizing nozzle for sulfuric acid is produced, and an overflow tank is produced. The silicon nitride material is combined with the silicon carbide material to produce the pump parts, the silicon carbide in the cracking device is used as the high temperature steam nozzle, and the lining of the sulfite autoclave is separated in the pulp production. The use of silicon carbide products for the lining of cyclone dust collectors for various boilers in petrochemical and thermal power plants. (5) Application in the machinery industry (1) Do abrasives and abrasive tools. (2) Heating the radiant tube on the gas carburizing furnace. (3) Various high-temperature furnace tubes, thermocouple tubes, and far-infrared reflectors are manufactured using silicon carbide. (4) Non-metal electric heating elements can be fabricated by utilizing the good electrical conductivity of the silicon carbide material.
